The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda, in Arcos de Valdevez, in the parish of Gavieira, has as a probable date of beginning of its construction, the end of the 18th century, judging by the date inscribed on the existing column at the top of the access staircase.  It is believed that in this place there was a small hermitage built to remember the apparition of Senhora da Peneda, whose cult grew and motivated the construction of the sanctuary.  This place of worship consists of the designated, stairway of virtues, with statuary representing Faith, Hope, Charity and Glory, dated 1854, the main church, completed in 1875, the large terreiro, the terreiro of the evangelists and the stairway with about 300 meters and 20 chapels, with scenes from the life of Christ.  The Senhora da Peneda Festival is annual, lasts for a week, between the 31st of August and the 8th of September.  legend of the peneda  Senhora da Peneda appeared on August 5, 1220, to a child who was keeping some goats, the Lady appeared to him in the form of a white dove and told him to ask the inhabitants of Gavieira to build a hermitage in that place. . The shepherdess told her parents, but they didn't believe the story.  The next day, when she was keeping the goats in the same place, the Lady reappeared, but in the form of the image that exists today, and ordered the child to go to Roussas' place, ask them to bring a woman who had been crippled for eighteen years, named, Domingas Gregório, who, when he got close to the image, regained his health.
